Trashy Bitch Plastic Bag Puffy Vest and Racer Back Vests

In Vests 2 and 3 we developed our process further and started by making a fabric from the plastic bags which we then used to craft the vests.

Trashy Bitch Plastic Bag Vest #1

The first vest we made from plastic bags has produced an interesting result. We are refining our method and cut to account for shrinkage and also to change the texture of the material.

One Trashy Bitch Can Change the World!

This project utilizes materials that would otherwise enter waste stream or recycle bin such as newspaper and plastic bags. With the potential to insulate and protect the body, these images demonstrate ways that these materials can be transformed to have aesthetic qualities as well through wearable fashion. The first image is a pattern in progress for a final coat. The next image is an example of a twisted dress top, and the third image is an example of the "fabric" created out of small units. More to come…

MAKE @Princeton

I found this blog from Princeton which is all about reusing and repurposing products: http://makeprinceton.wordpress.com/

DISASSEMBLY

So, I decided I wanted to use our old vacuum cleaner for parts for this project. When we moved in this September, we found the vacuum in a closet, but since we already had one, we weren't sure what to do with the old one. Obviously, I didn't want to throw it away and fill up a landfill, so I'm glad this project came along.

I also found a project in popular mechanics that reuses a vacuum cleaner motor to make a hedge trimmer. I realized the possibilities are almost endless for my project…

Part of designing a product is thinking about where your materials come from. In this week's assignment we take one product, object, trip, meal—anything, and find out the source and embodied carbon of its parts. For this project I was inspired by a New York Times article about food safety in the United States where they track the source of ground beef for one ground beef patty that was contaminated by e.coli and left a 20 year old girl paralyzed in 2007.
